I am really sick of snow.
Not sure if any of you know about the wonderful weather we had Friday night, but it was snowing/raining/sleeting with 35-40 mph winds.
I was working just on the other side of the SD border. About an hour and 15 minute drive or 80+ miles. The storm began just before I got onsite. 2:00pm rolls around and it's completely white out. I wasn't done with my work yet so I was trying to hurry up. But one of the servers I was working decided to take a crap on me and not boot backup. The stupid thing had a bad motherboard. The downside to this is that was their domain controller and they now have no network until Monday when the new motherboard comes in.
I leave about 4:00 and I can barely see anything due to the storm. I came to the conclusion that I will not be able to make it back to Fargo as it took me an hour to get 15 miles. I had to stop at Dakota Magic Casino on the border of North Dakota and South Dakota.
I get there and they have no rooms available. So I put my name on the waiting list behind 30 other people. So I wander around this place, play some games, eat some food have some drinks. It really wasn't a bad place to be stranded. But I knew I was going to have to spend the night in my car during this blustery storm.
It was a very cold and uncomfortable night. But I made it. I had to sleep in increments. I would turn on my car and get all toasty warm. Turn it off and try to fall asleep. The two times I did fall asleep I work up to freezing my ass off. So I would wake up and turn my car on again. And I won't go into detail of the trials of having to urinate whilst trying to stay warm.
6:30am came and I awoke to the storm being over. I wanted to get out of there and get home. Stopped at the gas station right there to use the restroom and grab a little something to eat. Got on the road, but soon noticed the on ramp to the interstate was being blocked by two mini-vans in the ditch. Which was making it impossible for the snow plows to get through.
I ended up driving around the perimeter of the casino a number of times and watched as a helpful motorist with a truck attempt to pull out one of the stuck mini-vans. But was unable to do so.
I went back in the casino to try not to spend anymore money. I played a few slots unto about 9:00. I and heard the interstate wouldn't be open till 10:00 at the earliest. I was looking out the doors of the casino and noticed people were getting on the interstate! Here I go, I'm finally going home.
I got on the interstate and soon realized it might have been a bad idea. But I was steady and sort of alert and I made the normally hour trip from the casino back home in just under two hours.
Sorry for the long post but I wanted to share my shitty experience. Sleeping in the car was the worst. Although it was one of the crappiest times of my life I didn't really get mad or angry. I was frustrated and irritated at the situation, but there was nothing I could do to change what was going to take place.
